Rei Ayanami is one of the coolest Anime characters I have ever seen. She may not be extremely cute or pretty, but she is incredibly strong willed, although very shy and antisocial. She is the most trained as an EVA pilot, and was seriously hurt during her first try at syncronizing with her unit. Rei is also very calm under pressure, which accents her personal strength. The only one she seems to open up to is Commander Ikari. As it turns out, Rei is a clone. She is also kind of an angel, since she is cloned from ADAM (the 1st angel), Lilith (the 2nd Angel) and has the mind of Yui, Shinji's mother.
Shinji Ikari is the son of Gendo Ikari, the head of NERV (the organization that created the Evangelions.) Shinji is very angry at his father for leaving him when he was young. Shinji is very quiet at first, only doing what everyone told him to do. A few episodes into the series he develops somewhat of an attitude (so cute!) and isn't so quiet anymore, yet still maintains his respect for others. He has a crush on Asuka, the pilot of EVA 02, and they constantly argue with each other.
